When I first started crocheting and following designers on Facebook and Instagram, I kept seeing the abbreviation “CAL” and wondered what it meant. After some digging, I discovered it stands for Crochet Along (see also: KAL — Knit-Along).
A CAL is a project split into parts so that crocheters all work on the same pattern at the same time.
Crochet alongs can be fun if you follow them in real-time. They keep you engaged with your project so that you don’t abandon it for the next shiny project. Receiving the next installment is like opening a new box on your advent calendar!
CA’s can be easy to find, but also surprisingly elusive! Crochet Current aims to bring them together in one central place so you can pick the one that works for you!

01
What is a Crochet Along?
A crochet along, often shortened to CAL, is an event where a group of crocheters works on the same project during a set period of time.
The pattern may be released all at once or divided into weekly or monthly sections. Some CALs also include videos, discussion groups, prizes, live sessions, or help from the designer.
02
Do I have to begin on the official start date?
Usually not. The start date tells you when the designer begins releasing the pattern or hosting the event, but most CALs allow you to join later and work at your own pace.
Check the designer’s page for any deadlines involving prizes, giveaways, pattern downloads, or group participation.
03
Can I join a crochet along that is already in progress?
In many cases, yes. If the pattern sections are still available, you can start from the beginning and catch up—or simply finish on your own schedule.
Crochet Current includes some CALs that are already underway when there is still time to participate. Archives are coming soon!
04
Are crochet alongs free?
Some are free and some are paid.
A free CAL may offer the pattern on the designer’s website at no cost, sometimes with an optional paid, ad-free PDF.
Other CALs require you to purchase a pattern, kit, book, class, or membership.
Always review the designer’s page before joining so you know what is included and whether there are any costs.
05
What is a mystery crochet along?
In a mystery CAL, the complete finished project is not revealed at the beginning.
The designer releases the pattern in stages, and participants discover the final design as they crochet.
You will usually be given enough information in advance to choose yarn, colors, materials, and an appropriate skill level.
06
Where do I get the pattern?
Crochet Current does not distribute the patterns.
Use the link provided with each CAL listing to visit the designer’s website, shop, group, or hosting platform. That page should explain how to obtain the pattern and join the event.
Some CALs require registration, an email signup, a purchase, or membership in a Facebook or Ravelry group.
07
Will the pattern still be available after the CAL ends?
That depends on the designer.
Some patterns remain permanently available. Others are free only during the event and later become paid patterns.
Downloads, videos, discussion groups, prizes, and designer support may also have deadlines.
Check the official CAL page for the most current details.
08
Does Crochet Current run these crochet alongs?
No, unless a listing specifically says otherwise.
Crochet Current collects and organizes crochet-along information from independent designers, publishers, yarn companies, and crochet communities.
Each CAL is managed by its own organizer.
Questions about patterns, purchases, materials, membership, or technical help should be directed to the CAL organizer.
09
How does Crochet Current verify CAL information?
We review the organizer’s available information and check important details such as dates, pricing, project type, and participation links before publishing a listing.
However, designers may update their plans after a CAL has been listed. Dates, prices, availability, and other details can change, so always confirm the information on the official CAL page before purchasing supplies or joining.
10
How can I submit a CAL?
Designers, hosts, and readers are welcome to submit upcoming crochet alongs for consideration.

Please let us know if you find incorrect information, a changed date, or a link that no longer works.
We want the Crochet Current CAL listings to be as useful and accurate as possible.
