Ruining your sweaters? Game-changing habits + micro crochet art!

All the crochet buzz in one e-mail
Hi, it’s Michelle!
It’s great to be back for round 2 of Crochet Current 🧡 Happy Father’s Day to all the dads who pretend to know what a half double crochet is and indulging us in just one more skein of yarn. 😂🧶
We are in the middle of a kitchen/new floor renovation in the downstairs of our house, and everything is literally everywhere! All my yarn is packed away into boxes so pickings are slim for new projects - does that mean I get to go buy more yarn?! 😄
In this week’s e-mail:
Yarn bombing for a cause
Jumping on the boho trend
Small habits that can make a big difference in your crochet life
You’re ruining your sweaters!

Why are young people getting hooked? Crochet is having a moment with Gen Z. Turns out, social media is pulling a whole new generation into the world of crochet. Many are picking up their hooks as a way to slow down, recharge, and get a little creative in the process with fresh trends popping up everywhere. (MSN)
Yarn Bombing Day celebrated on June 11, 2025. Every year, yarn bombers take to public spaces to wrap benches, trees, and sculptures in colorful knitted or crocheted patterns. Started in 2011 as a creative way to use leftover yarn and never-to-be-finished WIPs, the movement has grown internationally, with artists using yarn bombing to tell stories and add warmth to city landscapes. Trend watch: Micro Crochet Nail Art. Crochet boho outfits, shoes and bags are IN this summer, and adding to the trend is crochet nail art! Lace-like bows, tiny flowers, and whimsical textures come to life on the tiny canvas of a fingernail. (Instagram)

🧶 Stitch Happens: Little Crochet Habits That Make a Big Difference
Crochet is more than just a craft — it’s a break from real life, it restores mental health, and it even helps you problem-solve real life!
You don’t want your crochet to be your problem: a few small habits can provide solutions to your escape and turn your crochet session into smooth, satisfying progress.
These mini crochet habits can make a major difference in your next project:
1. Weave in Ends as You Go ✂️
If I could choose a super power, it would be to crochet endlessly — without needing to weave in ends! 😅
It’s tempting to leave them all for the end, but weaving in ends as you go prevents a tail-chasing nightmare later. Your future self will thank you!
This video shows two different ways to weave in your ends (NickisHomemadeCrafts) and if videos are not your thing see this article for 5 different ways to weave in ends. (Sew Homey)
2. Use a Row or Stitch Counter 🔢
Whether it’s an app, a clicker, or a trusty scrap of paper, keeping count makes everything easier — especially when life (or a Netflix binge) interrupts your flow.
If a tracker is too much work, then mark every 5-10 rows with a stitch marker as you go.
3. Leave a Longer Starting Tail 🧵
So many times I’ve got to weaving in ends (see #1) and found I haven’t left enough yarn to properly finish off.
Not too long, not too short — six inches is the sweet spot for most items. If you might need to sew something together using the tail, consider how much sewing you’ll need to do and leave a longer tail.
4. Pause to Stretch ⏸
Give your hands and wrists a break every 30–45 minutes. Do some finger stretches and wrist rolls to avoid cramps. Nothing worse than cutting your crochet session short due to sore hands!
Some people swear by compression gloves but I find they interfere with the yarn too much and are uncomfy. Just take a break.
5. Use a stitch marker to hold a live loop 🧷
When you put your work down (or get interrupted), clip a locking stitch marker into the active loop to keep it from accidently unraveling while you're away.
I clip stitch markers to the handle of the bag I’m using to carry my project.
Bonus points if the color of the stitch marker matches the color of your crochet hook, so you remember which hook you were using for the piece.
6. Check Your Work Every So Often 👀
Taking a quick glance at the end of the row helps catch mistakes early and lets you appreciate your progress along the way.
Nobody likes frogging work – the sooner you catch a mistake, the less you need to frog.
